John Michael Sylvester, age 67, passed away peacefully February 23, 2022. He was born February 18,1955, in Newburgh, New York to the late Anna (Amodeo) Sylvester and John Sylvester as well as Joseph Sylvester.
If you knew John, you knew what it meant to be loved by another human being. He had a way of making everyone around him feel cared for and free to be themselves. His hugs alone could turn a difficult day into a better one. Kind hearted, warm, emotionally open, funny and strong are only a fraction of the beautiful ways that describe who he was. John grew up in Marlboro NY, attending the Marlboro Central School District graduating in 1973 followed by receiving his associates degree from Ulster Community College. After graduation, he lived in California for a few years where he grew his hair out very long and often joked about not owning or wearing a single pair of shoes the entire time. In 1981 John met the love of his life, Maria, and his first daughter, Elizabeth. In 1986 John and Maria were married, and in 1988 they welcomed their second daughter, Amy, into the world.
John had a special interest in living his life to the fullest. For many years, you could find him four wheeling, snowmobiling, fishing, camping, flying his plane, and jumping off of cliffs in his hang glider. As he grew older his hobbies transitioned into family vacations, spontaneous adventures, dinners and ballroom dancing with his wife, Maria and friends. He also took a lot of pride in the property at his home; often giving away bundles of fruit he grew himself. John very much believed in always putting family above all. He made many sacrifices for those he loved throughout his life and even in his final days, he cared more about the feelings of those around him then he did his own pain. He filled every room with laughter and he made everyone feel like they belonged. If you ever needed to look up the word, "momma's boy," in the dictionary you would find the name "John Sylvester." There aren't many mothers and sons that are as close as John and his mother, Anna, were. Almost a year ago Anna passed away, and there is some peace knowing that when he crossed over, she was there waiting for him with open arms. John will be deeply missed and will forever live in the hearts of those that loved him.
John is survived by his beloved wife of 35 years, Maria Sylvester; his two daughters, Elizabeth Silva and Amy (John) Atkins; brothers Samuel (Kathy) Sylvester and Harold (Shirley) Sylvester; grandchildren Branden Cooper and John Joseph Atkins; niece Kristy (Keith) Levandoski and her children, Alexandra Levandoski and Leo Levandoski, as well as countless cherished cousins and family members.
