Obituary of Phillip John DeSantis, Sr.
Phillip John DeSantis, Sr. devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle passed into eternal rest on September 3, 2021. Born in Putnam, CT on December 22, 1937, he was the son of the late Tito and Maddalena DeSantis. Phil attended Putnam High School where he earned 12 varsity letters in baseball, football, basketball, and track. Phil continued his education at the University of Connecticut at Stohrs, pursuing a degree in business. While at UCONN he excelled as a remarkable running back for the Huskies wearing number 40. Phil eventually moved to Newburgh to join his brothers in the Newburgh Truck Trailer Sales. Phil's love for his family was unparalleled. He embraced his Italian heritage, which was evident in his amazing culinary dishes, his love for Ferrraris, and his belief that Christmas eve was indeed the best night of the year. Sundays would find him mixing up a batch of his famous meatballs, while enjoying his favorite cocktail of the afternoon. One of his greatest joys was watching his sons and then his grandsons play football. He was indeed their biggest fan. With the blessing of Principal Jack O'Donnell, Phil started the Marlboro Dukes Football Booster Club. He was also a former member of the Newburgh chapter of UNICO, and a member and past President of the Marlboro-Milton Lions Club. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Marlene Berkowitz-DeSantis; sons: Michael (Michele), Phillip Jr. (Susan), and Kevin (Anna) DeSantis; brother Tito (Jeanne) DeSantis; sister-in-law, Ann DeSantis; and brother-in-law Ian M. Berkowitz, and his beloved grandchildren: Michael Jr., Matthew, Phillip III, Kevin Jr., and Isabella. In addition, he leaves behind many nieces and nephews and his special godchildren: Tito DeSantis III, Tina Jodoin, Roni DeSantis, and Nicole Marie DeSantis. Last but not least he leaves behind his furry companion, Savannah. He was predeceased by his oldest brother Robert DeSantis and his sister and brother-in-law Rose Marie and Norman Jodoin, and many loyal, lifelong friends. In Phil's memory, perform an act of random kindness, smoke a good cigar, drink a great glass of wine, listen to Sinatra, and breathe in the smell of autumn. Enjoy every day and never forget the people who love you. A mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Mary's Church, 1209 Route 9W, Marlboro on Tuesday morning September 7th at 10:30am. Interment to follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Newburgh. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to The DiDonato Funeral Service, Inc. (845) 236-4300. www.didonatofuneralservice.com
