Linda Margaret Benton, age 73 passed away peacefully on National Nurse's Day, May 6, 2021 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. She was born on June 2, 1947 to the late Charles W. Benton and the late Margaret (Tompkins) Benton. She graduated from Roosevelt High School, Hyde Park, NY in 1965. She then went on to pursue a degree in nursing and attended Vassar School of Nursing, graduating in 1967. Linda's desire to attain further education led to her obtaining a BSN from Mount Saint Mary College and ultimately completing her Master's in Health Care Administration from the The New School for Social Research in NYC. She retired from Vassar Brothers Medical Center in 2013 after 45 years of dedicated service. She continued on to share her knowledge and expertise teaching clinical nursing at Mount Saint Mary College and Dutchess Community College until May 2020. At the time of her retirement, Linda had been the Director of Critical Care for 27 years. Though her contributions as a clinician and leader are too numerous to list, she is credited with initiating various programs and therapies to improve and expand the availability of State of the Art technology and nursing care in the Hudson Valley. Among them Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support & development of the Rapid Response Team. She was charged with establishing the cardiac catheterization lab, the expansion of hospital wide telemetry, and played a key role in the development of the cardiac surgery service. Additionally she is credited with establishing life saving intra-aortic balloon pump and hypothermia therapies at VBMC. Linda was best known for her calm and fair leadership style. She was a strong advocate for patients, families and nurses. A gifted teacher, she could simplify the most complex concepts in a way that all learners could grasp. In addition to her passion for nursing, Linda enjoyed traveling to the Caribbean and Europe. Long Beach Island, NJ however, was most special to her. She loved the beach, knitting, sewing and reading novels. Her love for animals was evidenced daily by the care and love she gave to her mini-goldendoodle Bailey Patrick. Linda was highly regarded by physicians, nurses and all disciplines alike. Her legacy for excellence in critical care nursing, lives on through the fine professional, compassionate nurses in the ICU at VBMC. Known as the "Queen of Hearts" for her expansive expertise in Cardiology and affectionately called "LB", she truly was a legend in her own time and most certainly a hero for the frontline. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her most treasured friend and companion Dorna A. Jodoin, her brother Charles W. Benton II of Rosendale, NY, her "forever sisters" Pia Antinori (John) and Tina Jodoin (Victoria Costello), nephews; Andrew Benton & George Albanese, nieces; Mary & Megan Benton, Rosanne Felicello (Marc), Andrea Grieco (Trevor), Gianna Antinori (Goddaughter), Madelena and Juliana Albanese, and Elyse Grieco. She was predeceased by her parents and sister in law Josephine S. Benton, beloved friends Norman Jodoin and Rosemarie Jodoin. The family takes this opportunity to thank the entire staff, management, particularly Denise Quirk-Hall, Director of Patient Care Services and ICU, Jennifer Osofsky, Assistant Nurse Manager ICU, Diane Barr, Nursing Supervisor and Diana Orr, Assistant Nurse Manager MSDU and physicians, most notably Dr. Matthew Apedo, of VBMC ICU for their exemplary care, compassion and love provided to her during her final days. Calling hours will be held on Monday evening from 6pm-9pm at The DiDonato Funeral Home, 1290 Route 9W, Marlboro.
