Frederick Edward Schmelz

Frederick "Fred" Schmelz a resident of Marlboro, NY entered into rest on Tuesday, December 26, 2017. He was 72.

Son of the late Frederick J. and Marguerite Schmelz, he was born in Brooklyn, NY on March 31, 1945. Fred attended Mary Queen of Heaven Catholic school and was a devoted altar boy. He graduated from Midwood High School in Brooklyn and attended City University of NY where he studied the culinary arts. Fred met Marie C. Abbate while working at a grocery store in 1963. They courted and were married in 1966. They had three children.

Survivors include his wife Marie C. Schmelz of Marlboro, his son Rick Schmelz and his wife Sharon, his son Paul Schmelz and his wife Teddi Ann, his daughter Laura Maleck and her husband Joseph all of Marlboro. His sister Janet Eynon and her husband Chuck from Florida, his brother-in-law Leonard Abbate and his wife Carol of New Jersey, 6 grandchildren; Timothy Simons and his wife Monica of Wallkill, Anthony Simons and his wife Thiara of South Carolina, Courtney and Ryan Schmelz of Marlboro, Thomas and Samantha Maleck of Marlboro, 4 great grandchildren; Christian and Aubrey Simons, Anthony and Mariano Simons and several nieces and nephews.

Fred's career led him to retail management where he experienced much success and obtained the position of Regional Merchandising Specialist. After retirement, Fred found fulfillment working in the activities department at Hudson Valley Nursing Home with his daughter- in- law Sharon Schmelz. Fred also enjoyed driving cars for Young's Motors, which gave him the opportunity to work with his sons.

Fred greatest pleasures in life were his family and his home. Spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were always cherished moments. He loved to garden and decorate, making his home a beautiful place for many memorable family gathering. He treasured the time he spent reading, crafting and playing cards with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Calling hours will take place Friday, December 29th from 4pm-8pm at the DiDonato Funeral Home, 1290 Route 9W, Marlboro, NY.

Funeral church services will take place on Saturday, December 30th at 11am at United Methodist Church Milton-Marlboro, Milton, NY with Pastor Jody Spiak officiating.

Private interment services will be held at a later date.
